I know this may be the furthest thing from your mind and I hate to break it to you, but school starts in less than 5 weeks. If you are like me, I can honestly say that this summer flew by. I didn’t hang “outsideee” as much as I thought. I went to a few parties and went to FL, but that’s about it.
Nonetheless, I want to share with you some tips on how to prepare for school in the summer. I promise the suggestions are not hard to accomplish, it’s simply readjusting your mindset. It’s important to readjust your mindset when it comes to school, because no matter what you can’t, you can’t avoid going to school. Forreal, there’s no way around it sis!
The only thing I looked forward to when it came to going back to school was the two obvious ones — back to school shopping and receiving my schedule in the mail. I remember calling all my friends asking what time their classes were. Then once I went to high school, my mom allowed me to shop by myself. She would drop me off at the mall with my set amount of cash and I was free to buy whatever I wanted for school. Of course, my outfits had to be appropriate, but I just loved walking through the mall with all my little bags filled with my outfits.
But going back to school is more than just receiving your schedule in the mail and going shopping. Entering in a new grade is a new opportunity to have a clean slate. You can change habits that didn’t work for you in the previous year such as going to bed super late, not studying, waking up 10 minutes before the bus comes, not trying new after school activities/clubs.
In today’s blog, I will share with you a few things you can do to prepare for school this summer. Let’s start with one of my favorite tips.
Get Organized
I am almost positive that most parents stress to kids the importance of being organized. Take it from me, if you can create a daily schedule/routine I promise you will be able to fit your studies, homework, activities and friends into your schedule. Now depending on the grade you are going into you may not be able to hang with your friends every day, but if you create a schedule you will definitely have time to hang with them.
The way I recommend you prepare for school this summer is by either using our To-Do list in the PURE Girls mobile app(available both on Apple Store and Google Play), Google calendar, or you can simply purchase a planner from Target for less than $15. If you don’t have an Iphone, I am sure Android has some sort of productivity app. In order to get the best results from creating a schedule/routine is setting time aside every Sunday to input things that you know are taking place that week, such as test, sports practice, dance or art class etc,
If you commit to your schedule/routine, I guarantee you will have a successful year. It may be hard to do and that’s why it’s important to start this habit during the summer months. It is still very early in the month. If you add some events to your calendar this month this will help get you in the habit and prepared for school.
Clean Up your social media
I know you may think this is crazy, but if you go through your social media accounts and really look at the people you are following. You may say to yourself that “yea me and so so don’t vibe anymore”. This could include old classmates, celebrities, influencers etc. It would be extremely helpful if your feed was filled with people doing and accomplishing great things. If people who you follow are always negative and sad, then that energy will transfer to you.
Just take a few minutes and clean up your account, that way when you get ready for back to school. You already know the type of vibe you want to be surrounded by.
Search Pinterest
Here is one of the fun parts. Shopping is one of my all time favorite things to do. I mean who doesn’t love a cute outfit paired with a cute pair of shoes or sneakers. Since you have extra time during the summer months. Try searching on Pinterest for outfits that fit your style. You can literally put in any type of style and various options will appear. Pinterest is not just for home ideas. You can create your own outfit board and every time you see an outfit that you like. You can pin the picture to the board.
Once you have an idea of what you want your outfits to look like. You can either shop online for the looks or go directly into the mall. I think it is important for your style to evolve each school year.
Readjust your sleep schedule
Adjusting your sleep schedule is one of the most important things you can do to prepare for school this summer. I don’t know how many of you did a full year of virtual, but if that was you. Keep reading! If that was you I want you to really think about what time you went to bed knowing that you didn’t have to get up, get dressed, eat breakfast and walk to the bus stop. I would bet my last dollar that most teen kids were operating off 3-5 hours of sleep. I know for my daughter she would take a long nap after her classes were over, which caused her to be up super late at night.
This is going to be a hard habit to change, but it is totally doable. The first thing you want to do is, avoid taking naps after 3:00 p.m. This will help to slowly shut your body down before bed. The second thing is start going to bed at a decent time at least 2-3 weeks before school starts. You don’t want the night before the first day of school, be the first time you have gone to bed early in the last 3 months. Now because you will be going to bed at a decent time, expect to wait up much earlier than you normally would during the summer. But waiting up in the summer is ok. If you wake up early, just lay in bed and gather your thoughts for a few minutes or you can pray and read a motivational book. Try not to jump on social media first thing in the morning. If you don’t want to read, you can speak positive things over your day.
Finally, all these tips are pretty easy to do, it simply takes a made up mind that you want to strive and achieve new goals this school year. I challenge you to challenge yourself and do things that will make you and your family proud. Greatness, strength, courage and confidence is in. God just wants you to tap in, so you may experience all that He has in store for you!
